Oil contaminated water interfere with domestic waste water drainage systems and can cause negative impact on the environment.
DISCHARGE INTO SEWER NETWORK:
The hydrocarbons constitute a major source of contamination of sewage networks and treatment of domestic wastewater. In addition to the risk associated with serious malfunctioning of treatment facilities caused by these substances (particularly in terms of inhibition of biological degradation processes), they also contaminate sludge process as well as the effluent discharged.
DISCHARGE INTO NATURAL ENVIRONMENT:
• Chemical toxicity with consequent lethal effects or deterioration of cellular functions.
• ecological changes, particularly regarding the loss of representative organisms in a community and the proliferation of so-called opportunistic species within the affected habitats.
• Indirect effects such as loss of habitat, leading to the elimination of species of high ecological importance.
To comply with current legislation, light liquid separator should be installed in places where oily wastewaters are produced, namely:
Service stations (including private supply post and cooperative);
Fuel storage and distributions areas;
Any site with a risk of contamination from petrol, diesel, or engine oil.

Technical Note: In accordance with European Standard EN 858-1 point 6.6.1, access covers must comply with the EN124 Standard
RSK-OS Light Liquid Separators includes a Fiber glass cover.
RSK have available a Cast Iron Cover, complying with the European Standard EN124. Is Customer responsibility the acquisition and installation of a cover complying with EN124.
RSK-OS Separators does not need any power consumption; it’s based on materials gravitational separation with different densities of water, assisted by an oleophilic coalescing cell.
The RSK-OS Separators allow the entry of non-chemically emulsified oily waters containing hydrocarbons (E.g., Oil and Petrol) with densities between 0.85 and 0.95.
Heavier materials (sludge, sand, etc.) settle into the Pre-Sludge Trap compartment and are trapped there. This compartment also holds hydrocarbons that easily float.
To optimize this process, separators are fitted with a coalescing filter, which traps the smallest oil particles, causing them to agglomerate into larger particles and consequently giving them enough upward force to propel them towards the surface.
In this chamber, the hydrocarbons will accumulate on the surface, while the clean water will sink to equipment bottom.
For good general corrosion resistance and stability against intracrystalline corrosion effects of the various steels listed in the EN 10088-1, EN 10088-2 and EN 10088-3, only used austenitic steels (304L - 316L)
Interceptor bodies are 11 ga. cold rolled steel, with an oven cured, acid resistant baked grey epoxy coating, inside and out. Standard cover is epoxy coated.
Constructed using resins, reinforcement materials, processing agents and other materials in accordance with EN 976-1:1997, clause 3.
General (EN 858-2:2003)
The sizing of light liquid separators shall be based on the nature and flow rate of the liquids to be treated and will need to take account of:
The sizing does not take into account special operational conditions.
The size of the separator shall be calculated from the following formula:
NS = (Qr + f x ×Qs ) fd
NS is the nominal size of the separator;
Qr is the maximum flow rate of rainwater, in l/s;
Qs is the maximum flow rate of wastewater, in l/s;
fd is the density factor for the relevant light liquid;
fx is the impediment factor depending on the nature of the discharge.
1. Determine maximum volume of waste water in G.P.M. or L.P.M., by summing volumes of all discharging fixtures that may enter the drain lines at one time.
2. Select oil interceptor with flow rating equal to peak volume in G.P.M. or L.P.M. Provide storage tank capable of handling the volume.
TYPICAL CODE REGULATIONS
When an oil interceptor is installed in an automobile, truck, bus, or tractor garage or in a service station or repair shop with facilities for motor or transmission overhauling, it must have a minimum static water depth of 24 inches (600) below the invert of the interceptor outlet and a minimum static water capacity of 6 cubic feet.
This regulation applies to facilities where not more than three vehicles are serviced.
For each additional vehicle up to and including ten, 1 cubic foot of static capacity shall be added.
For each vehicle over ten, an additional 0.25 cubic foot shall be added.
Vehicle storage and servicing:
Where motor vehicles are serviced and stored, an oil interceptor shall be installed with a static water capacity of 1 cubic foot for every 100 square feet of area to be drained.
The oil separator shall have a minimum static water level of 6 cubic feet.
Mechanical car washing:
In facilities designed especially for mechanical washing of motor vehicles, a sand and gravel separator shall be installed to receive the waste water from all washing facilities.
A minimum static water level of 2.5 feet and a minimum static water capacity of 50 cubic feet shall be maintained.
Where motor cleaning services are rendered at mechanical car washing facilities, an oil separator shall be installed in that section of the drainage system which receives waste water from this operation.
In motor vehicle storage facilities, a combination interceptor-drain shall be installed with a static water level of 1 gallon for every 100 square feet of area to be drained.
Manual car washing:
In a one-car washing facility, a combination interceptor-drain shall be installed with a minimum static water capacity of 30 gallons.
After interceptor is installed, establish operating water level by running water through interceptor at maximum flow rate expected.
If drawn off oil contains any water, raise vertical draw-off pipe until only oil flows from separator.
OIL ALARM DEVICE:
OMS-1 oil separator alarm device for monitoring oil layer in an oil separator
OMS-1 alarm device is specially designed for oil separators. It indicates when it is time to empty the oil separator and thus prevents harmful hydrocarbon emissions to the sewer system.
OMS-1 oil separator alarm device
OMS-1 is an alarm device for monitoring the thickness of the oil layer accumulating in an oil separator. The system consists of OMS-1 control unit, OMS sensor and a cable joint.
Figure 1. Oil separator supervision with OMS-1 alarm device
OMS sensor is installed into the light liquid storage chamber and gives an alarm when the chamber oil layer reaches a pre-determined level. The sensor is normally immersed in water.
The function is based on the measurement of the electrical conductivity of the surrounding liquid – water conducts electricity much better than oil.
Oil separator is regarded as potentially explosive (Ex) area. OMS-1 sensor can be installed in a zone 0, 1 or 2 potentially explosive area but the control unit must be mounted in a safe area.
The LED indicators, push button and interfaces of the OMS-1 control unit are described in figure 2.

OIL & SLUDGE ALARM DEVICE:
The RSKOil-20 is an easy-to-use oil separator alarm control unit that offers all necessary basic features. It can be equipped with up to three different types of RSKOil sensors that are identified automatically with a one-touch commissioning feature.
- High liquid level alarm, when the liquid level in the oil separator rises excessively e.g., in an outlet blockage situation.
- Oil layer thickness alarm, when the oil separator’s full capacity for oil or petrol has been reached.
- Sludge layer thickness alarm, when the sludge layer in the bottom of the separator has reached its maximum level.
- Separator leakage alarm, when the liquid level drops unexpectedly.
In these situations, an integrated alarm buzzer will sound, the display will show the alarm information and the relay(s) will switch.

Oil separators should only be installed in drainage systems where the "liquid light" need to be separated from the effluent and retained within the separator. They must not be installed in drainage lines containing sewage or domestic waste water.
The rainwater drainage areas unlikely to be contaminated with hydrocarbons (Ex. roofs or grassy areas) should not be discharged into the hydrocarbon's separator.
The Light Liquid Separator should be installed near the source of contamination, in well ventilated areas and with easy access for cleaning and maintenance.
In case of any doubt should always contact the technical services.
RSK-OS Separators do not need special care from a structural point of view, due to the high resistance and corrosion protection of the material from which they are made.
As a result, only the following items need to be checked, at least every three months:
Oils will accumulate in the water layer and must be removed whenever they reach a thickness of 10 cm (this can be checked manually by probing the surface with a stick, or with an Oil alarm system).
Sludge and sand will accumulate in the first chamber bottom (a higher or lower quantity, depending on the characteristics of the sludge trap installed upstream the separator).
These must be removed whenever they reach a thickness of 20 to 30 cm. The thickness of this sludge layer can be checked manually by prodding the sludge with a stick, or automatically using a sludge alarm system.
Whenever oils are cleaned out of the separator, the coalescing filters must be washed out. This procedure is carried out simply by using a cold pressure water jet, with the water remaining in the equipment after this process channeled to the end destination along with the remaining residue removed. This procedure must also be carried out if there is any reduction in the hydrocarbon separator drainage capacity (clogged filters).
